History, About and How from EBTB

EVERYTHING BUT THE BOX

About the Company

Everything But The Box was created in 2003 by Kamen Dobrev and Dobromir Dobrev.

Actually everything started in 1991 when we created our first company called Shark Art, which operated in the professional audio distribution and system integration.
During our work we found many problems in the design and build of the existing loudspeakers. So we decided to start our own designs. The first products were released in 1997 and they were active and passive studio monitors. In 2001 Terra was created and in 2003 we decided to separate this venture in a new company. This is how Everything But The Box appeared.
Now we operate in a factory near Varna, located at about 7 km from the Varna international airport. Most of the processes and operations are based in this factory.
All our products are proudly built in Bulgaria, which is a member of the European Union since 2007.

All our efforts are committed to one single goal: to design and manufacture first class products that please both the eyes and the ears.
We pay exclusive attention to all 3 main points in the Pro and HiFi loudspeakers design:
- The sound: The best possible sound.
- The build quality: No compromises.
- The design: Modern, Attractive, Unorthodoxly
We are small, but very dedicated manufacturer who relies on extremely talented people to manufacture very high quality products for advanced people.

We build our product to last and we can make each product exactly to your needs. We are the only manufacturer who may paint your loudspeaker in any of 16 000 colours.

The Products

You will immediately notice our loudspeakers no matter where they are placed. This is because of their vivid and attractive design. But things go far beyond the design.

Our goal is to manufacture not simply beautiful loudspeakers, but with the highest possible sound quality and perfect build. Additionally we offer the customers great advantages: more than 16 000 colors, real leather and much more. Our loudspeakers are built to last.
Of course the primary function of each loudspeaker is to play music. So despite the very attractive design, the leading goal is the sound. Form follows the function.

The sound of each loudspeaker on the market differs from the sound of the other. And as the sound is very subjective in perception, it is very difficult to compare the different loudspeakers.
Of course there are quite many parameters which could be measured and compared, but the sound as a whole in many cases is not so closely related to the mathematical parameters.
We design our loudspeakers to sound as realistic as possible. We do not try to pump the low frequencies or the high frequencies. We try to achieve sound, so when you listen to our loudspeakers to imagine that the musicians play in front of you.
Each of our loudspeakers is extensively tested in anechoic chamber and all they are perfectly tuned.

Parts:

One very important part of the loudspeaker is the loudspeaker’s driver.
And this reflects directly on the end price. The truth is that, if you use high quality drivers, you have a chance to make high quality loudspeaker system or not: it depends of your skills and talent.
If you use cheap low quality drivers, the only chance you have is to make something that simply sounds cheap.
In our loudspeakers we try to find the balance between the price and the performance.  We don’t use cheap parts. This is our guiding rule.
But we try not to use the most expensive too. We want to keep the final price reasonable and attractive to as many people in the world. We want our products to enjoy many people, not only few chosen ones.
So we use parts made by much respected manufacturers like Morel, Mundorf, SicaAltoparlanty, Wavecor, Jenving etc., that make very high quality products without to be price-maniacs.

Enclosures:

Form follows the function.
Each detail in our design has its explanation and leads to improvement in the performance.
At the same time, the design is beautiful and we want our loudspeakers to be the colorful accent in your home, restaurant, café or gym.

Our enclosures are made of die cast aluminum.
Why aluminum? - Because it is relatively easy (but not cheap) to obtain the complex shape that you sometimes may see in our loudspeakers.
There is not possibility of standing waves and interferences, both because the rigidity of the aluminum and the complexity of our shapes.

The processing is also relatively easy.

Aluminum is not so expensive (but not so extremely cheap like the plastics).
The aluminum enclosures painted with automotive lacquers do not change their color in the time and do not age. This way the loudspeaker is much more prestigious and solid.

In general, by using aluminum we avoid many of the problems common to the plastic and wooden particles boards.

Baffles:

The front panels of Terra Mk3 and Luna are made of our own formulated composite material. It comprises of polyester resins, stone wheat and other additives. As a result, the panel is rock solid - no possibility for resonances.

Feet:

The feet of Terra Mk3 and Luna are very sharp and so ensuring the lack of any transition of vibrations to the surface they are put on.
The feet are made by CNC machined solid aluminum.

Lacquers:

We use very high quality automotive lacquers made by Akzo Nobel.
They give to the surface very luxury look, and are very robust and scratch resistant.
They have extremely long life during which they do not change their color.

Hi Frequency passive equalizer:

Terra II and Terra Mk3 have one more unique feature: Built-in High Frequency equalizer.
By this equalizer you can tune very precisely the High Frequencies according to the room’s acoustics.

Additionally you can tune the loudspeaker to the most played material: For example, if you are a fan of the old tape reels, you know that the High frequencies weaken during the years. And you can equalize it by our loudspeaker. Or if you prefer playing mp3, often the compression boosts the High frequencies, so you can decrease them as necessary.
And all this is made in a second.

Design:

As we mentioned already form follows the function. Each part in the loudspeaker has its purpose.

  • The shape and the material of the enclosure are to prevent the standing waves and interferences;
  • The shape and the material of the baffle prevent from the “screening” effect and interferences;
  • The feet prevent from transition of vibrations;
  • The High Frequency loudspeaker horn is especially designed for uniform dispersing;
  • The bass port horn reduces turbulence.

The only parts that are not involved in the sound are Terra Mk3’s and Luna’s conveniently integrated handles – just in case you could not resist taking them home straight away.

The use of our loudspeakers:

Our loudspeakers are multifunctional. You can use them for different type of installations. Anyway, below is a short description of the main applications for each of them:

Venus, Venus LV, Sputnik:
  • Public spaces sound;
  • Stereo sound;
  • Home cinema.

Terra Mk3, Terra II, Luna, Pluto, Venus F, Venus D, SubTerranean:

  • Stereo sound;
  • 2.1 active stereo;
  • Home cinema;
  • Studio monitoring.

These are the basics you need to know of our products. The rest you can experience by yourself!
